Hello Readers,
Just as I promised I am getting ready to start on a full day of treadmill reviews. Actually, I’m getting ready to start on about 2 1/2 weeks of treadmill reviews. My vacation from school started today and my two week vacation from work starts Friday at about three o’clock. I have decided to devote a large portion of that time to writing about and reviewing treadmills and elliptical trainers. Oh yes, and getting my body in shape too! One of the tough things for me to do since leaving the fitness industry is finding places to test out fitness equipment. About a month ago I decided to take one for the team and asked store associates to turn on the treadmills for me to try and be that weird guy in the mall who spends a few hours a week on fitness equipment he has no intention of buying. I keep thinking that I’m getting a kick out of the stores eventually, but thankfully that hasn’t happened yet. So here is my first review from my most recent trip to Sports Authority, I bring you a review of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer.
My Personal Experience with the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer
it is very rare that I have an opportunity to test out and use an elliptical trainer that sells for less than $1000 that has the feel and comfort factor of an elliptical trainer that could easily sell for $1200 or more. The Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer is definitely one of those elliptical trainers. I have used Schwinn Elliptical Trainers in the past and they have delivered some excellent pieces of fitness equipment, but the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer is their crowning achievement. I really don’t know how to put in words how impressed I am with this elliptical trainer. In a word, the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer is smooth. If you are looking for the best cost effective elliptical trainer out there based purely on the motion and feel elliptical trainer can deliver, you have definitely found it! The Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer retails for about $600 and if that was my budget I can’t think of any other elliptical trainer I would rather bring to my house than the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer. It is comfortable!
The Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer on Paper
there is one more component I must consider before making a final recommendation, and that’s the specs. On paper, the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer is average to above average in most categories. The Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer has about 12 fitness programs which is just about average considering other elliptical trainers in the $600 price range, you get a far above average 16 resistance levels, and an 18 inch stride length. There are a couple of elliptical trainers out there in the $600 price range that come with a 17 inch stride length. I highly recommend you stay away from those elliptical trainers unless you are a very short person.
The one major flaw I see with the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer is the warranty. The warranty covers parts and labor for 90 days. This is far below average and this brings down the rating of the entire elliptical trainer. A standard warranty for any elliptical trainer that sells for about $600 is one year parts and labor. If something happens to your elliptical trainer outside of that magic 90 day window you are out of luck.
Final Analysis
the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer has the best and most natural feeling motion I have ever felt an elliptical trainer that sells for less than $600. I’m not exaggerating and I am not being paid any extra money to say this. In fact, to prove that I’m serious I am going to make a video as soon as I’m done writing my review. The mechanics of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer are simply incredible. I have been in the fitness industry for nearly a decade now and I have not seen anything in the $600 price range come anywhere near the feel of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer. However, there is one huge flaw staring at me in the face when I went review this elliptical trainer. The warranty is 90 days parts and labor. I really do like to see people get at least one year parts and labor coverage just in case something goes bad. Considering everything else on the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer is either phenomenal or at least average, I’m going to settle on a 4/5 rating for the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer. If you don’t mind a little risk with your investment I say go ahead and purchase the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer. In all likelihood nothing is ever going to happen, I would just hate for you to be the one in however many thousand who ends up with a repair issue and you’re not covered under warranty.
